The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald ROYAL Wootton Bassett was awash with important visitors last week, including the president of the national branch of the Rotary Club. The event coincided with the week that Princess Anne came to the town to confer its new royal status on behalf of the Queen. On Wednesday the district and town branches of Rotary hosted Ray Burman, the president of the national branch of Great Britain and Ireland, taking him to see the war memorial. "He's an interesting chap," said Richard Ever-itt, president of the district branch. "I was keen that Ray should come and see Royal Wootton Bassett on two points, firstly because the town has become so prominent nationally and also it was fortuitous that it coincided with the royal visit on Sunday." The Rotarians met as usual at The Wiltshire Golf and Country Club for a talk with their president, before heading off on a tour around the town. Mr Everitt said: "Ray gave us a very interesting talk and we went up to the war memorial and spent a few minutes there with the mayor, Paul Heaphy, and town crier Owen Collier. "I think Ray was very pleased to meet the mayor and Owen and interested to hear about Royal Wootton Bassett's new-found fame."

Following the Hop Skip & Jump visit the RIBI President and his entourage paid a visit to the nearby Royal Wootton Bassett. They met up with members of the Rotary Club of Wootton Bassett and District and with Mayor Paul Heaphy and took the time to pay respects to the fallen Heroes at the war memorial. |
