Walkley Midnight Walk Presentation Evening 2009
The Walkley Midnight Walk presentation evening was held on Friday 24th July at the True Heart in Bishopstone the venue used for the finish of the walk. This was the 19th year the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown have organised the walk for walkers to raise money for their own nominated charities. The club does not charge an entry fee or any charge to the walkers. All the costs of the coach transfers and refreshment stops are borne by the club. This year's walk attracted over 140 walkers for a variety of charities listed below,
British Heart Foundation - Calm Trust - Cats Protection league - Chernobyl Children in Need - CLAPA Oxford - Great Ormond Street Hospital Have a Heart - Help 4 Heroes - McMillan Nurses - NABD (National Association of Bikers for the Disabled) - Prospect Hospice - Ronald McDonald House - Rotary Club of Swindon Old Town - Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown - Sail and Cancer - Shaw Trust - Swindon Guide Dogs for the Blind - Swindon MS Therapy Centre - U-Care Oxford - War Child - WILSAR (Wiltshire Search & Rescue)
On the night of the Walk Presentation the President of the Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown Richard Fry and the Mayor of Swindon Councillor David Wren handed cheques to representatives of many of the charities who benefited from the walkers efforts. Lonnie a saxophone player then entertained the walkers, their families, charity representatives and Rotarians who enjoyed the evening and talking about the event and their particular charities and causes. Not all the charities were able to send a representative and some sponsor monies were paid directly to the charity by cheque and online.
The total of money raised by the walkers of the 19th Walkley Midnight Walk was a staggering £19,975.
I would like to personally thank all the Rotarians, their families and friends who helped not only on the night of the walk but in the weeks, and months leading up to the event. Without all their hard work and dedication this event would not take place and many charities would not benefit from the funds raised - Bob Barrett Immediate Past Past President & Junior Vice President
